Neneh Cherry has made a huge impact on the past 10 or so years of music. You make recognize her one-hit wonder, the 1988 single “Buffalo Stance.” This new album proves that Neneh Cherry is not just a one hit wonder. On Blank Project, Cherry returns to the basic combination of beats and vocals. Blank Project is very simple, putting a focus on the deep lyrics. Tracks like “Across the Water” are as simple as can be. Cherry literally sings over a drum beat with no other accompaniment. Through her fulfilling rich voice, Neneh makes for an emotional performance that more meaningful than some songs of large groups. Some of the tracks feature bass lines and synth parts here and there. At no point in the album is there any busyness, only simplicity. Ranging from conversational flow to almost a rap, Cherry maintains the club-pop roots of her original smash hit. Cherry is notably confident in this album, seeming strengthened by the minimalist tone that is exemplified.
