Kenny Ayres joined WCUR in 2011 to bring play-by-p

Kenny Ayres joined WCUR in 2011 to bring play-by-play sports coverage to the station, gain announcer experience, and host a sports talk show. He did all three in three years.

As a freshman, Kenny listened and called in to WCUR’s “C&D Sports” every week. He was their only caller. One day, the co-hosts invited Kenny to join them.

The semester after “C&D” graduated, Kenny formed “Brotherly Love Sports Talk,” the only all-sports talk format at the time (he *never* played music). The only exception was his show’s opening, containing music and clips he swiped from the web.

BLST had one consistent co-host outside of Kenny. Sean Bobbie and Kenny were roommates all four years of college and brought play-by-play coverage of WCU Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey to WCUR. They, too, had to sit in a “little wooden box in Ice Line,” like our current commentators.

Kenny regularly interviewed big names in the sports world. Merrill Reese, Chris Wheeler, Joe Wendle, and Jim Jackson. He was most impressed by his cold-calling skills when he scored an in-studio interview, autograph session, and meet-and-greet with Flyers winger Ian Laperriere.

From all the interviews, games, and on-air debates, there’s one thing that stayed with Kenny the most: white WCUR pens. “Best pens I’ve ever had. Took about 100 when I graduated.”

Brynn Pezzuti was a WCUR DJ from 2010 to 2012, rot $Brynn Pezzuti was a WCUR DJ from 2010 to 2012, rotating co-hosts and forming multiple shows. The time and day of her shows? “ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ” With two of her closest college friends, Dillion and Joe, Brynn’s first show was called “Two Guys, One Brynn” and co-hosted “NEPA Takeover” with another music-loving friend, Courtney. Pop Punk was Brynn’s go-to, discovering new music from whatever was sent to the station. Her shows were structurally unstructured. She’d play anything she wanted. Brynn was notorious for making show Facebook pages, an earlier version of the many Instagram pages our current DJs have for their shows. During her freshman year, every available surface in the WCUR station was covered by vinyls, CDs, and stickers. The stickered coffee tabletop from 2012 (with coffee stains intact) hangs in the studio today. “It was a safe haven to just hang out.”$
